Journey to Cruelty Free #1

Hey guys!

So, since becoming vegetarian, I really wanted to think about the makeup and skincare that I was using. I know that being a vegetarian doesn’t eliminate all of the cruelty involved in my eating habits but in the effort to minimise the hurt that I’m creating, I wanted to try to start using majority cruelty free products. I’m not doing this to make myself better than anyone else. This is just a personal preference that I believe aligns with my personal beliefs.

I plan on making this a sort of series where I update you all on my progress and my planning. In this post, I am going to identify what brands in my collection are cruelty free and to what degree they are cruelty free (brand doesn’t test/sell in China, parent company doesn’t sell in China, vegan). A lot of brands don’t test but their parent company sells to countries (China) where it is law to test on animals, so you’re still more or less buying into cruelty. I hope that this is helpful, I am only including brands that I personally use so this isn’t everything that is cruelty free by any means. This is already going to be the longest post ever haha. I hope that you enjoy the post!

For this post, I’m going to break the brands down into types of makeup (face, cheeks, lips, eyes, etc) and tell you to what degree the brand is cruelty free. I will not be doubling up on any information but I will mention if I own products from that brand that fit that category so that you can potentially help me swap certain brands out for others.

CF Face
The first category that I want to talk about is face makeup. This includes: primers, foundations, concealers, and face powders.

Revlon:
Do they test or sell to China?
Revlon hasn’t tested on animals since 1989 but because they choose to sell to China where it is mandatory, if you purchase from them, you’re allowing for animal cruelty.

Who is their parent company and do they test/sell to China?
As far as I’m aware, Revlon is a parent company, they own Almay and Sinful Colours, so yes they sell to China and therefore engage in animal cruelty.

Are they vegan?

Maybelline doesn’t test on animals themselves but they do sell to China and therefore their products are tested on animals.

No.

Rimmel:
Do they test or sell to China?
Rimmel doesn’t test on animals themselves but they do sell to China and therefore their products are tested on animals.

Who is their parent company and do they test/sell to China?
Rimmel’s parent company is Coty Inc. Coty has a very confusing statement regarding animal testing that doesn’t actually talk at all about animal testing or what they do which is super annoying and really just suggests that they do, at some point, engage in the testing of animals. Not all of Coty’s brands sell in China, which means that those brands that don’t sell in China are cruelty free, they aren’t cruelty free approved. However, Rimmel is sold in China, meaning that Rimmel is tested on animals.

Are they vegan?
No

Australis is owned by Heritage Brands and they are cruelty free and they do not sell to China.

They are not completely vegan but they do have a number of cruelty free products that can be found here! My only non-vegan product from Australis is the Fresh & Flawless powder.

I tried to find information on this without much luck. They’re a Korean brand and I’m not sure about the laws on animal testing in Korea but they do sell to China through their parent company.

Who is their parent company and do they test/sell to China?
As far as I can tell, Touch in Sol’s parent company is Bonne Co. and they seem to distribute products in China so I can only assume that they test on animals.

pink-divider-no-background-md

Regardless of their cruelty free status, there are some brands that I just will not buy for other reasons. One of them is Revlon. Despite Revlon having a relatively diverse range of models, the ex-CEO (as of two months ago) of Revlon made some disgusting racist comments that I won’t repeat here and for that reason, I won’t support the brand. The fact that they also choose to sell to China and engage in animal testing is just another nail in the coffin for why I will not support the brand.
Another brand that I will not support for similar reasons is Gerard Cosmetics because Jen Gerard is known to have bullied customers for having negative opinions of the brand. They may be cruelty free in terms of animals, but they aren’t in terms of human beings.

pink-divider-no-background-md

So that’s a run down of my cruelty free and non cruelty free brands in my collection. In my next post I plan on assessing the percentage of my collection that is cruelty free and see whether I can create a whole everyday look with cruelty free products.

I hope that you have a great day!
